Målarskolan (The Art School) is about life at an art school, where the students are trying to find themselves and their artistic practices. The leading character, Figor Mandelstam, is a constant source of irritation due to his enormous desire to please.

Ekman was appointed deputy professor at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm in 1977, where she also started the first video department in a Nordic art school. In 1999 she was appointed vice chancellor of the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, the first woman to hold that position. She has exhibited widely since 1967, and has written and produced for television, created set designs for theatre and in 2009 she was appointed artistic director and managing director of the Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten) in Stockholm.
